    MK1 Engine/Drivetain drivability improvements

So I picked my MK1 up tonight rebuilt with parts froma 78 model that was owned by an old man (had 76,000 on the clock) a few little things needed to be changed but all in all everything was good, just a few things I noticed

1)taking off in first and reverse wad a bit jumpy/sputtery (although through other gears it ran very very smooth, almost like my 2012 tsi golf)

someone suggested this could mean the carby needs a rebuilt (or a whole new one) when I said weber they told me to stay away, and just get the current one rebuilt.

another person said it just takes a while for the auto choke to warm up and after about 20 mins of driving things should be good

or perhaps because they are all bits and pieces from a few different cars it might need to be run in so to speak

    2) should I be putting 98, 95 or regular fuel in... it does smell a fair bit of smoke/petrol which of course i expect from an old car but anything I can do to improve it?

otherwise suspension and brakers are fine so far, will upgrade eventually but I really wanna improve the first and reverse issue and try to minimise as much smoke exhaust fumes as possible

    cheers

I run my Mk1 on Vortex 98, just put a little bit of 'Flashlube' in it which helps prevent the valve seats receding. I used to get it from my local Discount Auto's. Was about $40 for a bottle and that would have lasted me roughly a year filling up once a week. Pretty sure you can get it cheaper elsewhere but I can't remember where from!

Worst part about Weber Carburettors as well dude is finding someone who can set them up and tune them properly. Bit of a dying art carby tuning.

Sounds like the carb is running rich. Either a tune or like you said replace with a weber.

Webers are not hard to tune if you know the basics and start from scratch. Not just bolt it up. On my 1.6 it is more fuel efficient and has more power with the Weber on it. Expect to pay around $300 with a manifold.

Nice purchase mate. Post some pics.

The original Golf will run perfectly on 91 unleaded, because of the quality of the valve seats there is no need to have an additive, waste of money.
The original carbs were stuffed 25 years ago, throw it away.

Okay took it to Burwood Carburetors Tim there seems like an expert

he said its running very very rich as mik suspected

hes going to fix it up and hopefully this will make the car a lot more enjoyable to drive (like other mk1s I have been in)

next still will be some new shoclks and springs to improve the ride, then better brakes

An overhaul kit and a tune - it will be like a new car.
