yep drove mine to work and back all the time
no trouble at bar one time when i lost power to the cooling fan
and we get mid 40's for a week at a time
as every one has said flush out, thermostat and good coolant and you can't go wrong
Only problem I had with overheating on a mk1 was dirt on the OUTSIDE of the rad so be sure to clean it well when you reverse flush it.

2008 POLO GTI - SOLD
2005 MkV Golf GTI - couldn't resist
drove mine back from the mechanic(who'd had it for 3 weeks) this morning..whilst now tuned well, a few carby leaks and throttle spindle sticking, but the temp. never moved beyond the 1/2 way mark on the guage..thermatic fan running well, which I noticed after switching motor off at home maybe the Mk2 alloy radiator really does the job ??

If the throttle is sticky put i nice big return spring on it. That's how i had it set up. I'm surprised the carbie is leaking. I never had that problem. How's she go? Happy with it?
I had a Mk1 diesel radiator in my Mk1 (well, i still have it..). Never ever had problems with heat. Just used normal run of the mill coolant.

Mate, all the things here are valid symptoms of overheating and I commend them all. I recently replaced the thermoswitch in my cabby (1.8ltr CIS GTI engine) with a lower temp kick in one.
The Mk2's had two speed fans that seemed to do the trick, this second stage fan sounds like you are landing an aircraft but it works.
Also worth checking is the timing and tune of the engine. If it is out of tune or timing it has been known to cause excess heat.
Finally, oil. Oil will assist in managing temperature so make sure you are topped up with a good oil that stays together in the heat.
Always a frustrating task but once you get to the bottom of it your car will thank you!

drove it in peak-hour this morning (on the way to B&M Fuel Systems)with idle b/n 2-2.5k...wasn't too happy and died a couple of times but came good eventually without a complete stall...anyway B&M is putting a kit thru' the carby, fixing my dodgy return spring set-up (oh I wish I had my tools...which are still in storage in Tweed Heads) and fitting a new accel. cable and pedal grommit (thanks to Frank @J&F)
Pick up is tom. and more in store b4 Sunday's show!!
