Mk1 Brakes are designed to put the fear of God into you, but they will stop the car if you push em hard enough.
Linkage bar across the engine bay adds vague feeling, check all the links for play
Rear brakes can be adjusted as above, or replaced with drums from a Golf CL or SEAT Cordoba which are bigger and slightly better designed. No other mods needed, just bolt on ;)

When I was playing around with mk1 brakes I found the one thing that made a big difference was the instalment of a 9 inch booster that came out on the later mk1 cabro's, over the standard 7 inch.
It improved the pedal & the overall braking & its a very quick job to do

I bought camira calipers ages ago to fit to my golf...... cost me $30 for both... they arent quiet the perfect fit, but the holes line up... I think all you would need to do is add a few spacers to the caliper.... i ended up keeping them standard as vented dics are expensive....
The yellow car was "not good" when purchased. A quick trip to Pete's and a set of GTI calipers and disks later - much better. Then Adjust the rears right up. Then adjusted the cross-bar up so that the brakes are *just* not grabbing (I had to take a shave off the driver's side fork to get sufficient adjustment). Overall result - very good!!!

I've got mk2 gti calipers and mk2 ate power discs on mine and they do a great job of pulling the car up very rapidly.
Brake fade only seems a problem now as the pads are very thin and discs have worn down.
I recall on ebay there was a guy up here in qld selling brakes in a package calipers, pads and discs. for around $280. I will try and locate this guy as i'm not sure if it was only the one pack. only a few months ago.

Brit race green mk1 16v with new tail lights, and a brake light switch under the pedal so no more playing with pressure switches anymore.

If you really want good brakes without taking out a mortage a good combination is
1. G 60 caliper & carrier
2. Carrier adaptor bracket (www.momentumotors.com)
3. 280mm disks
& bob is your aunty
P.S. you will also need to improve the hydralic aspecta as well
9 inch booster & 22mm or 24mm(kombi) master cylinder
you can also use scirocco caliper if you can get them, but it will cost about the same as the above & you'll have only 256mm discs

Thanks so much guys for all the options will be looking further into some of these for sure!
I believe i read a post on here a while back about fitting vp commodore calipers and magna rotors and with little modification you've got 279mm vented stoppers.
A look at the wreckers will probably net you a near new set of the early magna rotors and a pair of calipers.
The rotors need the centre hole opened up i think the calipers need to be spaced with a 3mm washer, and as the commodore bolts are larger you'll need a collar on the retaining bolts to hold the calipers still and in position.
That's what i remember reading about the conv hope that helps i might try it some time soon just out of curiosity.
