    mk1 5 stud coversion

was it someone on this forum that had VR6 BBS wheels on their mk1?
A friend and i were dismantling a wrecked VR6 i have yesterday and just for fun we put the BBS wheels along side his Mk1 cabby. Looked sweeeeet!

We removed the entire knuckle from the VR6 and have been comparing it up against the mk1. It certainly looks doable altho it looks like it might increase the front track by 20mm per side. Will obviously need to fabricate a few bits and pieces and figure out longer tie rods. But my question is. has anyone here actually had experience in doing this conversion? or have they seen info on how it could be done anywhere?

Just tinkering around really. Its more a weekend killer for us than something that might be practical as i have all the parts already and 7 of those BBS wheels cluttering up the garage!

Surely the offset will be the issue. I dont think you will be able to get the wheels to align nicely. Mk2 hubs etc DONT fit Mk1 and Mk3 and Mk2 are interchangeable.

My car doesn't align perfect, the VR6 lower control arms stick out too much and give it too much camber, it's repairable tho just havn't got around to it, i'd like to know if it would work on a MK1 though.

The rear stub axles & brake assemblies should bolt straight up with the only mod being to the brake pipes & Mk2 Scirocco handbrake cables. You can still buy these genuine(I paided $80 a pair recently).

As far as I can see, the VR6 ball joints have to be grafted into the Mk1 lower control arms.

Here's a link. Very well documented with good descriptions & pics.

Tim, how does the position of the tie rod tapered bore sit in relation to the knuckle / balljoint position in a horizontal plane, Andy in UK is modding corrado knuckles to fit the Mk1 assembly, drops the ride height about 45 mm, and keeps the bump steer to a minimum. He still has to modify the shock housing to give comparable suspension travel. The main thing here is to keep the roll centre position close to stock as to have predictable handling...

Post some pics side by side if ya going into this in detail..

Oh yeah, link...its about 1/2 way down.. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothrea...894286&page=12

my friend has all the parts at the moment. He is pretty good with this kinda stuff. Has plenty experience working with race cars and their suspension setups. We will see what comes of it. Might get thrown in the too hard basket. But knowing my friend. nothing is too hard!
