Yeah and I`d like to see a pic of the front seats. Are they GTI, or GL?

In the UK you could get an inject 18 5 door Mk1, but it was not a GTI, was always a GLi or something like that. GL model car with the injected engine.

Yep, the 4 Door has always been in the GTI range. but not unique to Germany. They were all over Europe.

The reason we hear so much about 3 doors is that the UK did not get 4 doors until fairly late in the Golf 2 model run. From that the uk mob figured if it didn't have 3 doors it couldn't be a GTI. Somehow the myth got started here then.

The reason the UK only got 3 doors was cost. The 3 door was the bottom price spec. Back in the 70s when it all started the UK was the poor man of Europe so cost mattered a lot in that market.

In Europe though (including the UK) upmarket cars were always 4 doors. From Jags to Mercs to BMWs to Alfa Romeos ... the top end was kitted with 4 doors.

It was the same with VW. The 4 door GTIs were the top spec models. So the later low production LHD only G60s were also 4 doors only. Thats why - when at last we got the GTI here - it was a spec'd up 4 door we got, same treatment with the VR6s, Golf 4s and 5s.

Today, in the new modern wealthy UK the 4 door now seems to be as common or more so than than 3 doors too. If VW does extend the 3 door range to the GTI here it will be interesting to see how they price it and how it sells against the 4 door.
