True, but its best to have a machine shop check it...unless you have all the equipment

A metal ruler across the face will tell you if there is serious warpage otherwise the head gasket will compensate for any irregularities, especially something as small as .0003mm. I've never had any block or head shaved when I've switching heads.

That's why you've never heard it mentioned in those 20+ build threads you've read. It's overkill.

Agree, just buy a fine oil stone for $10 ( most are double sided any way) and run over the full surface in a diagonal motion in all directions and you will see straight away if the surfaces have any high or low points. Just use full smooth strokes.
If they are not flat you may be able to return/ swap if you bought from a wrecker

if you have a piece of flat glass, lay the head on and check to see if it rocks. if it doesn't, you'll be pretty safe!

Whereas I'd agree, that sometimes it's not necessary, my "clean and straight" could be different for someone else. Take it to a proffesional let them them tell you if it needs or doesn't need to be shaved. Small price to pay for doing it the right way

Thanks for the input everyone. It's great to have such informed and responsive members to turn to with these things. I don't know how anyone could struggle owning a mk1 with you guys around... just keep passing on your knowledge so we can keep these beasts on the road!

p.s. I'll be updating the main post with pics/progress, so people don't have to rummage through the thread for the juicy bits :p
