    MK 1 Gearboxes

    Hey guys,

Just wondering what gearboxes can be run on a 1.6 motor in a mk 1 golf..
the standard 4 speed is getting a bit crunchy.. is there a 5 speed which will fit ?
    Thanks

a 5 speed is pretty easy to fit.

you can fit either late mk 1 5 speeds (rare) or more commonly mk 2 and 3 (non VR6) and various Seat 5 speeds. The gearbox's are coded 020. and they all have different ratios.

You'll need a different gearbox mount (LHS chassis leg) and most probably 100mm inner CV's (or change the diff flanges for some 90mm ones, if you can find them) You'll also need to modify the linakges or buy some 5 speed ones.

PM Golf Loon. he will probably have all the bits to help you out.

this link will tell you some more about the different ratio's:
