I had a MK1 GTI that did over 150bhp at the crank and that was on std 90mm CV's and drive shafts, My mate has a MK1 Turbo with std stuff on too, that does 175 at the crank.
You'd have to be rough to break them I reckon.

Hi all, i was wondering how much torque the gearbox and CV shafts can handle on a Golf MK1? what sorta torque are you guys with hotted up motors putting out?

the motor im putting in will have around 300Nm peak torque, i am thinking the box wont handle it...?

You might want to look at a aftermarket LSD, they're generally used for more serious motor sport/general thrashing with lots of power. I don't know if you'll need it though..
Peloquin or quaife come to mind. They're normally about 1-1.5K + shipping from the US/UK, and about 1K installation. Rough figures, so don't quote me. Might be 3K all up.

I take it this in in reference to your electric conversion? You shoud be able to program the speed controller to have a progressive torque curve so you can't get all 300nM from a standing start.
Most likely your tyres will determine the gearbox loading as well as the clutch(if you use one). Once the tyres or clutch are spinning, that's the peak torque on the box.
Should be an interesting project.

Unfortunatly the controllers where you have that sort of control over settings are a little out of my price range hehe, but the controllers do take a second or so to get to full load so i wont get max torque at a stand still (theoretical stand still is about 340ish).
Was just wondering if when i put some fat tyres on it would the box be up to it? i guess it would probably spin the wheels (no clutch) b4 it chewed the box or shafts, but saying that ive seen smaller output cars snap shafts before (notably a friends swift... 2 so far, and 1 box!)

The 90mm CVs will probably be ok, depending on their condition, but you won't find the 020 gearbox lasts especially long.
Ideally, you need a good strong 02A manual and 100mm CVs. And, if you get an LSD, there's no point paying someone to do if you have a bit of mechanical knowledge - they're not overly hard to install (in an 02A that is - I've never done an 020, but they're essentially the same)

I think one of the main things for an 020 is get ride of the rivets and get the diff bolt kit... Save some hassels![]()
i'd say at 300Nm you'll be at the limit for the 020 box...
its not 1st gear you'll need to worry about, its all the ones after it.
keeping in mind that my mk3 probably puts out a decent 220Nm (turbo diesel) through CHD code 020 box on wide tyres, and its pretty heavy (a little under 1200 i think)
i would concur that at low speeds, or even 0 rpm, the tyres will probably give way before your driveline---mostly. the little 90mm cv's wont last if you give it 300Nm and you have some lock on.
02A would be better... but i dont think essential. i suppose its like anything - you have to drive considerately if you want it to last![]()

I depend's on the application. I've heard & seen video's of an auto mk1 running 9's on stock driveshaft's & C.V. joint's. This same car was a daily driver when it was running high 10's.
An auto is no where near as hard on drivetrain's as manual's.
Saying that, I've also broken to mk1 GTI close ratio gearboxes with bugger all power & I wasn't even hard on them.
Had a stock mk1 diesel 4sp & that copped an absolute hiding & it didn't miss a beat & that was with 130hp.
Also, I currently have a mk2 020 with 100mm cv's fitted & I'm yet to have broken anything in it & it's had a very trumatised & abusive life!
It does crunch in 2nd though. Standard issue, even in the current gearboxes.
020's are luck of the draw or russian roulette I reckon!
If your kind to them, you shouldn't have a problem.
