Where??? the engine bay is so full already and i dont want to top mount i like the bonnet the way it is
just get a small cooler and mount it next to the radiator. or get a narrower radiator and mount the cooler and rad next to each other.
or mount it behing the radiator air will still pass through the radiator and the intercooler.
pics of your setup might help.

Plenty of option as the radiator will sit back a bit into the bay, so you can fit a narrow one infront of the radiator, assuming the rad placement hasn't been changed. Pics would help a lot.

You need only cut away a small amount of the radiator support panel (behind the badge area) and you can fit an intercooler suitable for 400hp+! I really don't see what the issue is. If, for whatever reason, you're strapped for space, you can also use an air to water setup, more common in some of the turbo and s/charged UK VWs, but these are fairly exy.
People fit V8s in the front of Mk1s without drastically modifying anything; I'm confident you'll fit an intercooler with (what I assume) is a 4cyl engine!!

you need to move the rad back about an inch, and put a small intercooler in there.
Have a search around there are plenty of build threads with mk 1 turbo's & intercooler placement!
Heaps of room for the intercooler in front of rad.
There is a build thread here from when Tim in Melbourne did his turbo'd it, plenty of room in his mk1 could have fit a vr in the bay too!
