I have had two sets of the ST coils in the past and was very impressed with both the quality, finish and ride they had in the mk1.
Having had low budget hottuning coils years ago there is a very noticable difference between a cheap and higher priced set.

There are a good number of decent coils available these days including H&R, weitecs, ST and the KW's. I would only say to skip the low level ones like JOM and hottuning as they are cheap and nasty alternatives and within the year you will want to upgrade.

I couldn't fault the ST coils I had, they were around $950 delivered a few years ago so are possibly cheaper now.
shoot sales@dv8performance.com an email and see what range/prices they do at the moment

I'll vouch for the STs as I now own one of those Mk1's Dan spoke about. The car is currently slammed on it's ass too with about 30-35mm of clearance and it rides well! Even when the roads get a bit bumpy D:
1976 VW Golf "Swallowtail" - Rallye Red (long term resto)
    2009 Pirelli GTI - Stg3 killer
    2009 R36 Passat - Daily baller
