looking at buying a mk1 project

Ok so my plans are on buying a mk1 as a project car to turn into a circuit race car and was just wondering what sort of engine conversions would fit and go well?

Anything up to and including mk3 engines will go in on standard mounts.

I would work out what class/series you want to race in as each has different engine rules, I know some require you to have an engine that came in that model of car where as some are quite free.

In saying all this, a 16v swap is probably the way to go, more power straight out of the box and you would be able to take it further than an 8v.
    76 MkI 3 door - daily drive/project - 1.8 5speed
    76 MkI 3 door swallowtail - 16v track car
76 MkI 3 door "long term" project

Hi mate. There's plenty of info in the mk 1 section, about lots of different engine conversions, so have a look around.

main thing to consider is budget & purpose (but you already have purpose)

Have a look at Pete Jones' wreck to race thread, as if you decided to go for a project like this, these are probably all the things you'll need to look at/consider! there's HEAPS of good information in this thread.

props to getting stuck in a doing a project yourself. It's an absolute hoot, you'll hate it at times but it's worth it! I personally love it.

Remeber when you're doing your budget, that there will have to be a certain amount you'll have to spend on race gear. seat, harness, fire extinguisher, tyres etc. Not all are required to enter events, but probably helpful.

I'm not savvy with the QLD rego/road rules, but you'll have to decided wether you want to club rego or full rego or no rego the car, then it limits you as to how much & where you can drive it etc, or whether it needs to be trailed to events and the like. lots of things to consider, I hope this gets the old grey matter ticking over for you.

Thats cool just throwing it out there you looking for a 2 door? 4 door? may have a decent 4door rolling shell shortly also a mk2 jetta rolling shell and a rusty 2 door. as for the budget answer maybe think of it in terms on how far you want to go as already mentioned these things can get out of control.

Go down to S & L race fabrications tradelink rd browns plains have a chat about a cage or going to a tube chassis configuration ( if budget is no option) then you can run any engine you want!! they will build it to suit also if you have a rubbish body this type of setup will keep the mk1 rigid, here is a pic you get what i mean
