Looking at buying a MK1 Golf. What sort of fuel economy can I expect? 1.6 petrol motr

Hi guys,

Newbie to the Early Golf's here. Looking at buying a very original MK1 Golf petrol. Just wondering what sort of fuel economy I can expect from the old girl??? I don't necessarily need exact figures either comparisons or rough km's to a tank is fine.

one in good condition, and driving sensible should net you something around the 8-9L per 100kays.
I havnt run a full tank yet, but just slapping 20$ in (about 14L) will get me around 150Kays of town driving. no hwy. and thats a mix of hard accelerating and normal driving.

Not sure how relevant my experience is but I was getting between 5.9 and 6.3 L per 100 k's with the 1.8 in my MK2. That was mostly country driving. Fuel injection will always give you better economy than carbies.

Depends on what sort of driving you are doing.

A 1600 with a 4 speed down the freeway is horrible, I drove my current car back for about 4 hours on the Hume when I bought it and it gobbled fuel because it was revving so hard.

Around town though if everything is tuned nicely it won't be to bad though.

They can be alright on fuel with a 4 speed,
I drove my 1.8L 4 speed mk1 from East Doncaster in Melbourne up to Bendigo, then up a bit further about 30kays, to Ellmore i think it was, then back to bendigo and around. then back to Doncaster and i still had fuel left in tank to drive around to shops and what not for 2 days. that was off one tank.

I reckon the 1.8L is more efficient then the 1.6L, needs less revs, more torque so less throttle input to get same speed.

sounds like everyone has been driving mk1's with problems!

a healthy 1.6 with std carbie should get you between 6.5-7l/100km, driving economically. even with a 32/36 dgv you should be able to get those numbers. Same from a 1.8.

A well tuned 1.8 with big carb (like a 40mmDHLA) can get 8-9l/100km driving nicely.

ofcourse it can all go to pot if you have a lead foot, but you should be able to keep up with traffic and even move through it and still get 7l/100km.... main thing is having the carb in good working order, set the ignition timing properly and ensure the advance is working as it should, and have good plugs/leads etc. and run it on 95.
