$2500 for a head gasket is insane. Definitely get another quote.

No brainer. For $2500 I can buy and build a pretty good MK1.

I'd expect around $800 to do a head gasket. Your guy is ripping you off.

The IS heads are way more expensive to work on for some reason.

An 318IS with head issues is a wealth hazard. Get rid of it and fix the Golf.

What's needed to get the Golf on the road?

This is basically what my mechanic explained to me, hence the steep price he quoted. Something to do with the heads requiring machining once the gasket is removed.

As far as I know the golf only requires a small amount of work to be complete, but that depends who I go to. Probably a windscreen, I suspect an engine mount, and maybe a couple of other small things. It shouldn't amount to the $2500 that it will cost to repair my BMW, so will definitely be the cheaper option

Windscreen - get a new one and get them to fit (few hunderd dollars) or swap with the one in the orange Golf (if it's OK). Cost $0 but it's very easy to brake a windscreen if you don't know what you're doing. Engine mounts are easy to fit so cost should only be for a new mount. Other small things - buy and replace as needed.

Sounds simple but if you've never done this type of thing before you need someone looking over your shoulder. At least with a MK1 there's not much stuff that's too daunting and you've got lots of people here willing to give advice.

    Cheers

    Paul

318is is a twin cam head.
318i has a single cam head

Which mount do you need? The only tricky one is the one on the pulley side of the motor.

Ring Gary at Team windscreens for a MK1 windscreen . He's had a lot of practice on Golfs and he's fair on price.

You are comparing a 1976 old Mk1 non GTI golf, with a reasonably moderm BMW. This is VW forum everybody will tell you Golf Golf, include me

To be fair, depend on what mileage you do and the road/weather condition that you travel daily, a Mk1 Golf really isn't suitable for the purpose, may be I'm over 50 that's why I have that opinion. LOL

$2500 sound expensive but if your BMW is in generally good condition it worth the money to fix it as a daily, and keep the Mk1 as toy. Of course it depend on your budget. You can't sell the BMW with good money anyway due to brown HG.

Make sure you don't miss the comfort of your 318is when you drive the good old Mk1.
