Lap Timing Options? Devices?

Probably not the correct spot to post this, but I generally find the answers I need from fellow MK1ers..

I'm doing another track day soon and I want to track my individual lap times and improvements as no timing device is provided.

So, the question is how do I record my lap times? Please keep in mind, i'm competing at an entry/beginners level and do not want to spend big on high tech devices etc.

If you have an iphone you could try an app like this, uses gps CMS LapTimer for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store. A friend of mine found it to be pretty accurate. I'm going to try it next time.

A mate with a stop watch is the cheapest option.

If you've got a phone with GPS.

Racechrono for Nokia / Windows. RaceChrono - The GPS Lap Timer

Plenty of options for iPhone too.

You can sometimes get standalone systems cheap on ebay. search for "lap timer"

of course when you start competing, most Australian tracks use this system

Some ECUs like the Motec has inbuilt capabilities.

Here's a cheap option from Jaycar too:

Car Voltage Meter / Clock / Stopwatch - Jaycar Electronics

Probably best to see if you can find a mate/family member/partner to sit in the stands with a stopwatch and clipboard - this way you don't have to worry about pressing buttons and can concentrate on the drive!
