I decided to reboot my thread as I want to keep this updated as I go along... I'm loving this car more and more each day!!!
The goods:
- GTI 1.8 8v JH Motor
- GTI front brake caliper/discs
- Weber 32/36 Carb
- JOM coilovers
- MissingLinkZ adjustable + weighted shift kit
- 4speed Diesel gearbox
- Autostrada 15x7 +20 ET
- Bridgestone rear tyres and Kumho front
- 400W amp + full Pioneer audio with bluetooth
- Wolfburg momo steering wheel and gearknob
- Original dash (uncracked)
- Original front/rear seats restored
The bads:
- not as straight as it once was (someone had a bingle)
- phantom issue with gears slipping above 4k rpm (super rare, has happened maybe 5 times)
- several interior bolts need tightening (everything squeeks!!)
- the paint job was done by a ten year old and had zero prep work (even painted over a sticker on the boot)
- getting significant blow-by (yet to be determined.. oil is disappearing into the nether)
- fuel pump/gasket has a leak (driveable but uses more fuel than it should)
- steering vibration >85kph (likely to be wheel bearings)
and now some tastey goodness for your eye holes.
I like to think that the paint code is RAWRange....
Very happy with the Autostradas
The strut brace from Pragmatic in Melbourne (Paul on the forums )
Installing the coilovers
Schwanky new carby linkages
the throaty Weber 32/36 DGEV (electric choke)
a.k.a the Fappington 9000
Tweeters making things crisp in the cabin
The stache, cause frank has a stache...
The head unit, which I scored half price..
Bluetooth and ****...
In lieu of a vanity mirror, this is basically how I look whenever the engine is running...
And finally, his heart... the 1.8 8v (LOVE the sound of these engines)
I know it's messy... but with a little love and some change (lol, that's an understatement) he will one day be shiney again, free of squeeks, leaks, and flakey fragments of oxidyzed metal (found holes in the floor... was wondering why I could literally hear the road).
Cheers lads,

Looking good! Are you going to paint the front lower section?
I hadn't planned on anything immediately, I currently have plans to rehupolster the drivers seat (finishing the set of original seats), then I'd like to replace the carpet and make up my own door cards and repaint any plastics/vinyl in the interior.
I was also planning to make a weekend of sanding back the bonnet and doing something with it.... But major rust/paint work won't be happening for another 2-3 years. For now it's just the basic cosmetic things.
It's about time you started a thread.
Good to see this car go to someone who's willing to spend some money and do some tidying up. Now get those wheels on and dial in lots of lows.
Cheers
Paul

Dude those wheels are sick! Nice find with the car and the wheels
77 Mk1 GLS 2 door - That sinking feeling
76 Mk1 Swallowtail 2 door - Replace that BMW & 76 Sweetheart
Cheers guys I can't believe how pricey carpet is -.- possibly the most expensive thing I want to buy...
So that'll go on the back burner until some cheap carpet can be found, as for now I'm just planning to:-
- repaint the interior plastics
- install bonnet struts
- upgrade the wiper motor to a mk2 motor (seen done but unsure of what's involved)
- Install weighted shift kit (once it arrives)
- fix up audio installation (I did a dodgey first attempt and need self-tapping screws)
- install bucket seats (and sell the originals)
- 5 speed gearbox conversion (again, seen done.. seen mounts built, unsure of what's involved)
Anything further will require more fundage and time than I have access to... but I could honestly just leave it as is and be happy haha.
Nice one. Have seen this doing the rounds on ebay etc for the last year or more, glad to see it's getting some TLC, finally.
Also, please put some bumpers on.
Welcome to what we've known for years.
