wait, you won't to go too an auto??
I've noticed a few of you have converted from auto to manual. I'm not this ambitious and i already have a 4 speed. But theres a cheap two door mk1 on ebay atm. But it's an auto. So whats involved in swapping my engine and gearbox over as one. And brining its pedal box with it. (is that the right term?)
Any advice appreaciated.
wait, you won't to go too an auto??
God no! I want to put my diesel and 4speed in a 2 door body. But am asking how hard it is to swap over the pedal assembly and shift mechanism
oh good. you had me worried for a second there!
Some fella in melbournes just done it with his daughter cabrio. therefore I have no idea. hahah joking.
I believe if you have a complete car from which to swap from, it should be ok. I think the steering colum (how do you spell that again??) needs to be changed with the pedal assy, and then the rest just bolts in I believe.
Having said that, I've never done it, thats just the commonly accepted theory.
Wait for someone who's actually done it to chime in though.
It is defiantly do-able though.
What's wrong with your 4 door body though?
and you'd have to swap fuel tank and lines too, ie put the diesel ones in.
Theres really not a lot wrong with it. It's pretty straight apart from one ding on the back. And no major rust just a little surface rust on the panels.
Main thing is that the guy i bought it from gave it a really terrible home paint job, and i hate paint prep to fix it. Also i bought it unregistered, but i should have it ready after this weekend so long as they dont winge about light surface rust.
fair enough.
you could always repsray it yourself, depending how picky you are...
also, light surface rust, if you're worried about it, give it a quick rub back and go over it with some rattle can primer or something. chances are if it's just on some panels, it should be fine. Only structural rust is an issue down here (floors, inner wheel arches, chassica rails etc etc..)
took me about a week of evenings and 2 weekends to change my daily rocco ( same A1 Platform) from auto to manual, I had to set up the FI tho, swap and re-wire the dash .
if your going to use the diesel, you will need swap the fuel tank and lines over from the diesel car to.
Appears you have both cars side by side, would take maybe 3 days or so i would expect depending upon your mechanical ability and electrical knowledge ( wouldnt be to much electrics with the diesel fortunately) expect to find a few items that will need refurbishment along the way as 30 yr old cars do wear...so allow money and time to repair / replace as you go.
Before you start , get a DECENT manual ( bentley ) is the ONLY option here, rest are crap. unless you got a VW factory onecan find em on fleabay US
Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...
If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??
Cheers,
Grant...
