indicator relay keeps dying on me

hey guys, indicator relay, keeps cutting out or not working if you may, and when you jiggle it around it will work again, but then after a whiole it doesnt work again. tried new relay and same problem, obviously its a wiring problem, took it to the local mech and he reckon an hours labour should do it. does that sound right?

is it anything simple that i can diy?

    cheers

I reckon your fuse box is dying. Its a common problem. What year is your Golf?

hey buddy, mk1 79 model, do you reckon i should just not bother and source another fuse box?

its simple enough to switch over, just a few clips and plugs here and there and switch over the fuses, what do you guys reckon?

I have always replaced them when they do that. You also get voltage drops in them causing a weak horn and dull lights. Usually caused by moisture.
Pm me if you are interested in a new one.

    Thumbs up

Yeah mine does it too. I am going to build up a new fuse block but am going to use CB's instead of fuses. Much better.

hmm, that is interesting, sounds like either you have back contact with the globe connecting to the wiring. Is it only on one side(ie: front left) or is it on both. It maybe as simple as getting a larger globe (not in watts). I have had these problems a lot.

    andrew- pm sent!!

it really does seem like a fusebox problem, sometimes when it cuts out the stereo cuts out as well, but othertimes its the stereo doesnt cut out.

sometimes it cuts out as in there is not light up on the indicator light near the spedo, but othertimes it just stay on, but doesnt tick, and when this happens, and you turn off the ignition, the left parker light goes on.

some weird stuff going on here. i hope its just the fusebox. cause its a easy enough job to switch over.

Nail on the head Andrew, have had many golfs and scirocco's over the years, the fuse block / relay plate is a weak point , specially when the rust under the windscreen seal allows water to run ontop of the fuse block..

seal the leak and replace the fuse block.

This screen seal looked fine from outside.. when the dash came out it told a different story tho, you can see the watermarks where it flows down into the relay plate/ fuse block..

couldnt be bothered doing the welding repairs, so just gooped it up with some silicon stuff..No leaky any more
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,

yea mine does the exact same thing. indicators slow, not working. give it a jiggle or tap and it works. same with the wipers. It gets annoying thats for sure. Thought the same as you with thinking it was the relay. I tried 3 relays and even an electric one and it was the same.

So it is fuse box. i bet everything electrically that goes wrong in a MK1 is traced back to the fuse box lol.

The fuse boxes have always been a weak point. They cause many a headache. They contain about 4 rows of metal laminates inside and quite often they overheat contact pins. I had a golf years ago that missed and lacked power. It was only getting 5.5 volts to the coil when running. Weak headlights can usually be traced back to the box too. Sounds like a group buy coming up???

76 fuse boxes are virtually impossible to obtain....
