Ok, the black and white wire pictured terminates to a terminal that also has another black wire (also pictured) that earths to the chassis just above.
Could the white wire be just some wire that acts as a fuse?
Anyone know what the white wire is going to the ignition coil? It seams to terminate to the black wire at the coil. Other terminal has a red wire, and a green wire which seams to go directly to the base of the distributor (earth???)?
Tried jumping starting the golf the other day (via jumper leads) and while cranking, this white wire started to smoke and melt the plastic sheath its in. I've tried following the white wire to the fuse box, and as far as I can tell, it actually doesn't make it inside the cabin.
Anyone know what could cause this melting?

Does the White wire have a purple looking thin line on it? if so its the Power Feed wire from the fusebox for coil.
It should be resisted so i think it should read 8v ish, if your running electric ignition that wire needs to be gone and unresisted wire put in.
There should be a fused spot on the front of the Fusebox. L15 i think.
