IDI guys, let me pick your brains

Right, so what I'm dealing with (and have been over all three of my Mk1 ownerships) is wanting more performance from my diesel. Have spent the last two weeks researching (without much luck, most sites talk about turboing the NA or getting an elusive Giles pump), and also trying to find turbo diesel stuff in the states, but finding it very hard.

So, aside from the governor mod (which I'm kind of apprehensive about doing, and info and help on that is much appreciated), what else can be done to squeeze more oomph from my 1.5D? I tried winding the fuel up, but all it did was drop my economy with little to no increase in performance. I'm currently kind of leaning towards turboing the 1.5, but that includes ARP head studs, metal head gasket, as well as sourcing manifolds and a turbo (which is what I was trying to get from the states). The 1.5 is not exactly ideal for turboing either.

Wanted to source a 1.9 AAZ from a Mk3 but aside from being as easy to find as poo from a rocking horse, there's some issues apparent with them that's making me steer away from it.

All of this is for a daily driver too, and as I do a lot of rural driving the two things I don't want are bad economy (bit of an oxymoron, performance and good economy) and soot (well I want that but SAPOL don't).

    Any help is much appreciated

Check out gldgti's turbo diesel cabby.

Turbo Diesel Cabriolet Project (with head porting pics)

What he doesn't know about turbo diesels isn't worth knowing.

There's also a strong diesel following on the Edition 38 forum.

    Cheers
