HOW TO: Remove Oil Seal from Behind Diff Flanges?...

Gearbox out of the car...changing some seals in the gearbox whilst it's out.

How do I remove the oil seal behind the diff flanges? I'm guessing there is some sort of puller tool?

    Advice/photos appreciated.

    Michael.

Assume you mean the driveshaft output flanges. There is a tool to compress the spring (depending on the year) or to help pull the flange off if needed. I have a few different seals that I bought in error if you need any? Also check out (Welcome to BrokeVW.com) for pics, advice etc. It should be easy with the box out, I've just changed one with the box in which wasn't too bad.

yes the driveshaft output flanges...i've already got them off the box and i have the tool to compress the spring, that's fine.

i was curious as to how to remove the oil seal themselves (one on each side).

is it matter of levering it out with a screw driver? i just don't want to damage anything, because they seem to be stuck in there pretty good.

Sorry Micheal, should have read your question more slowly. You can get seal pullers, which are quite cheap. I used a screwdriver but spread the load at the fulcrum as I have a box with the green sleeves.
