help needed : what 5sp to use for mk1 1.8 16v project , cable or not to cable

hi just wanting to know what box to source for my mk1, i will be running a N/A 16v with quad carbs and i want to squeeze it for as many ponies as possible.
should i go cable change or stick with the rod? i was thinking cablle so i could run a sequenchel shift kit but i have heard bad things about these ruining stock box's

theres a lot more to it than cable shift and rod shift.

The cable (02a and later) boxes are more modern, stronger and (significantly)heavier. They will take more torque and have longer ratio's available. They also havea more conventional clutch layout allowing the use of bigger, more modern clutches that will again take more torque.

The 020 boxes are very good considering the age and for a 5 speed transaxel with the strength they have are pretty lightweight. Personally, I also find that the 020 with rod shift is a faster gear change than the 02a.

Its not likely you will be able to make more torque than a 210mm 020 clutch can handle, so if i were you I'd stick with the 020 - but you could have any number of other reasons to run an 02a anyway - just depends on what you are going to use it for.

If your going to beat on it and do burnouts everywhere, maybe you should opt for the 02a.

02A also needs custom gearbox mounts, and, unless you have one of the rarer mechanical clutch versions, you'll also need a hydraulic clutch system to be retrofitted, or to buy a separate mechanical slave kit.

I would also stick with an 020, unless you're chasing more power, drive like an idiot, or have a bigger budget available

P.S. I have a brand new SQS shift kit here if you go 02A and want to buy one! I bought it with my gear set, but decided not to install it.

if none of above is aplicable to you then stick to your standard gear
i would say go for 02A if you can 100% if not use 020 and then upgrade later
