Josh,
It'll depend on which model you have...I can access both sides of my front bumper's bolts from above, but if it is fiddly for you, then from below may well be easier!!
I am having real trouble removing the front bumper of my golf. The rear bumper was easy as the bolts were in the boot, but the front bumper is proving more difficult.
i know that on the left (looking into the engine bay) the bolts are accessable with a little fiddling, but on the right, they are tucked away under the battery plate and next to the radiator.. i'm going to have to prop up the front and go in from benieth aren't i?

i can seem to access both of mine from up top. the one under the battery was harder but still can be done.
Man, seems like you're struggling with simple stuff. You can reach it under the battery tray.
My ratchet-spanners help to undo them. Before you get at them crawl underneath and soak the bolt heads and holes with WD40, then undo it the next day.
13mm bolt heads IIRC? Or someone correct me.
yeh from memory they are 13mm's
ratchet ring spanners help alot. I can get them out from the top or the bottom of the car. Too easy!

Ask for help, just do it in a single thread, like your car's thread.
yea, clutters the forum up a lot less. I also suggest getting a haynes manual too!
Sometimes you have to thing out of the box with a few things, but most of a mk 1 is pretty simple.
Use a 13 socket with a small extension. I find it's best to stand next to the fender and facing forward (ie facing the same way as you would be driving) and excessing it that way.
My tip is to get the following tools together as a minimum - and you buy say Repco brand you will get a good kit for value money (not chinese cheap though)
Socket set - Metric 6mm - 32mm
Screwdriver set - Philips and Flat
Open ended/Ring spanner set - 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 should be enough
Hammer
Good trolley jack
That should get 90% of a mk1 apart and back together again!
