    I'm a hand's on learner.
That's how i learn. I had no idea when i first got my golf.

Bugger this learning from a book. Learn by practice and feel, with a book to consult if need be.

BEFORE YOU GO AND BUY A REBUILD KIT!

make positively sure that your fuel pump is working properly.

i've seen several mk1 fuel pumps work at various states - from not at all, to a bit, to freaking awesome.

pull it off the car, and manually operate the lever up and down. if it doesnt suck like a bastard, its faulty. trust me, you'll know if its working properly when you try this, just keep your eyes away from the inlet and outlet pipes.

if your fuel pump is cool, then yeah, i'd be looking at the carbie next.

    good luck

PS - chuck on an old carbie and try it!

    It's a 40 DCOE right? i'm guessing 32 or 34mm chokes. Most likely 32.

    Turn it over again.

Don't just go off the flywheel mark. Also use the cam pulley marking's. That's what there there for.

If it's 180 out, it won't run at all & spit fuel out the carb, most likely with flames too!

Yes - your leads must be 180° out too.

    Yeah, that's right.

By the way, that wouldn't make any difference to the performance.
