Josh, if your engine is pinging, just do a basic timing setup without looking at the flywheel. Pull out No.1 spark plug, & turn the engine over till TDC.
You can use a screwdriver & poke it down in there & feel while turning the engine backward's & forward's with a spanner where TDC will be.
Once the engine is at TDC, remove the dizzy cap, loosen the dizzy hold down clamp & rotate the dizzy till the No.1 slot on the dizzy base is in line with the rotor button.
This will set your timing almost spot on 0° & a good place to start. It should be around 7° BTDC.
I honestly can't figure out why it's pinging like a bastard if it has full fuel supply, timing is spot on & from what you told me running rich.
If the carb ran fine & revved on your 1.6L & you haven't touched it, it should be fine on the 1.8L.
Is this the fuel pump out of your old 1.6L or is it the one that came with the 1.8L?
What's the point gap? It should be .4mm or have a dwell angle of 44-50° How hot are the plug's? (What's the number) NGK BP6ES
Did you gap them? 0.8mm
