You can use a screwdriver & poke it down in there & feel while turning the engine backward's & forward's with a spanner where TDC will be.

Once the engine is at TDC, remove the dizzy cap, loosen the dizzy hold down clamp & rotate the dizzy till the No.1 slot on the dizzy base is in line with the rotor button.

This will set your timing almost spot on 0° & a good place to start. It should be around 7° BTDC.

I honestly can't figure out why it's pinging like a bastard if it has full fuel supply, timing is spot on & from what you told me running rich.

If the carb ran fine & revved on your 1.6L & you haven't touched it, it should be fine on the 1.8L.

Is this the fuel pump out of your old 1.6L or is it the one that came with the 1.8L?

What's the point gap? It should be .4mm or have a dwell angle of 44-50° How hot are the plug's? (What's the number) NGK BP6ES
    Did you gap them? 0.8mm
i didnt gap the plugs and i dont know how hot they are. But they are the BP6ES's

i used the fuel pump that came with the "1.8" however, its having the same issues that it was having with the 1.6, its leaning out at 5 grand.

ill try all that before i take it into RWC, it shouldnt take that long and ill get back to you,

its really confusing me now, what if the timing belt is out? i swear i put it on properly?!

    ahh jeez

Easy test to see if it's lean..

Pull the choke on 1/4 or 1/2 way and take it for a drive. If it runs better and has more grunt, and stops pinging, it's too lean.

    Surely you need vacuum advance?
Does the dissy have a vacuum pump? Does it work?

the dissy does have a vacuum pump but i blocked it off as the Weber doesnt have any place for a vacuum advance.

hmm that means i have to hook up a choke cable

Or just manually move the lever and then test drive it.

Yeah just use something to hold it stuck open.

It'll sound like its got a massive vacuum leak at idle, but don't worry about it.
