Hard to start when warm, easy when cold?

hey guys, i've noticed lately that when i havent started the mk1 for a few days it turns over 1st crank, but if i take it for a drive then switch it off then try to start it it's hard to start.

been trying to read up about this but haven't had much luck finding a fix.

    any suggestions?

Could be the choke? Not sure how you would check it tho.

It seems to be starting the car whilst cold, correct? this means the choke must be working to some extent. It could be a whole bunch of stuff. save yourself the headaches, just get it diagnosed by a mechanic, will cost you maybe $50 then either fix it yourself with the knowledge of what the problem is, or get the mechanic to fix..

oh, and I also suggest you buy my '76 mk1, 2 door

Plugs or Leads, had the exact same issue once, the plugs where to blame. When ever the plugs where hot it wouldn't want to start and you had to turn it over like 5 times or so...

Plugs + leads hey, will have to try that, I have no idea how long the current plugs have been in there so should do them anyway, if still no love I'll take it to Camden Gti thanks for the tips.

carb could be getting too warm and getting a vapour lock. Check you have the standard head shields.

Also, make sure the inlet manifold water is plumbed in. Belive it or not, this will help prevent the intake manifold from getting too hot when the car is turned off, because of the increased thermal mass (with the coolant inside) and convection.

plugs and leads, yeah this would make sense. When I changed my plugs/leads and adjusted the dizzy it made a HUGE difference... totally worth doing anyway, even if it's not the problem if it's not this though I'd probably take it in yeah.. saves the headaches lol

Bit of a long shot but worth checking for is blocked fuel tank breathers.

If the tank breather is blocked and the fuel cap is sealing well a vacuum can form in the tank which stops fuel being drawn into the carby and actually sucks it out of the carb when you're parked up.

When the car's warm take the fuel cap off and see if you can hear a hissing sound as air is drawn into the tank.

Sometimes the breathers can be blocked by the charcoal canister or by the exhaust melting the breather line.
