To Gurny or Not to Gurny

Steve I did it to my engine...two of my engines in fact. Just completely cover up the electrical components (as static said^^^) and get some degreaser or carby cleaner....leave it to chew through the dirt then blast away. Then grab a compressor and blow the crap out of the electrical components even if they were covered

I know bro I did it to the mk3 all the time no sweat just didn't know the process for a mk1 with the electricals and that

just take it easy around the radiator, the water pressure can deflect the fins without to much effort ( wash froma greater distance to lower the impact pressure..)

i dont worry about the electricals, just blow it all down after with compressed air, then CRC spray the elecrical joints..

I get the engine hot then hit it with an entire can of $2 degreaser from supercheap. Let it sit for a while then pressure wash it using a kero gun full of boiling water and truck wash.

Usually only take a couple of litres of boiling water to clean it all up.

Normally its done when engine is cold with a hot engine you can potentially crack your block, radiator, exhaust manifold etc..etc... you can do it while its hot but its generally not recommended, what ive been doing for years and its the way ive been shown is degrease the engine bay hose it down with a gurney or a hose then start the car and let it run until hot this will evaporate any water or moisture that has gotten into the electrical system eg dizzy.

Fair point, I didn't mention how long I let it sit for once I hit it with the aerosol degreaser. I usually let it sit for at least 1/2 an hour before hitting with the boling water, sometimes overnight. Even so I am using boiling water not cold water so any thermal shock should be minimal.

A Gurney is much higher pressure than my kero gun though, I'd be very careful with one of those things, I've seen them tear timber window frames to bits!

if you can get to a hot water gurny it'll make the world of difference as well!
