Absolutely don't use mega low springs and std shocks. The shocks won't last 5 minutes.
You need to get some shortened shocks. Far better to go for a matched kit of shocks and springs. If you want really low then get coilovers. Try evorobin

Anyone here got their guards lipped?
Need to get mine done to fit the wheels that have arrived (ET13 15x7 EXIP's).
I'm alittle worried about cracking the paint given its age. A mate got his done on a newer car with a heat gun, but I reckon mine wont turn out that great. Anyone else got theirs done here with decent results?
Also, how have people lowered their golfs? I was thinking of using just the std struts and getting some super-low King Springs (and likely stiffer sway bars to prevent rubbing). But not sure if they will be low enough.
Cheers

What mega low. Ive got -40mm on standard shocks (mk2)....
Head gun and rubber malet usaly does it, u can use a grinder aswell and grind the lip away.
I have been told to fill the little gap thats left over between the roled lip and the inside of the guard with 'no more gaps' or 'no nails' or whatever that water tight stuff is. This will prevent rust, i dunno if its true though.

On newer cars with 2 pac paint you can get away with alot more when rolling guards on the mk1s things are different depending on how good your paint is being the age of the car if you have standard paint it will most likely crack or flake when rolling to and extent, usually the amount of cracking and flaking will depend on how much it is rolled.
the lowered kings springs are only - 30 or 40mm
that the lowest they made when i brought mine
a couple of years ago
and they are fine with standard shocks
mine now same springs cut one coil with the
standard shocks and front will bottom on heavy bumps
go with the coilovers if the budget is big enough
kings just are not low enough !!![]()
Thanks for the replies guys.
While the budget can stretch to coilovers, the ones I've seen have ~12kg spring rates which are MASSIVELY too stiff. It'll make the golf too unbearable and way too stiff for the chassis. If spring rates of ~6kg are available, I'd consider it.
Wheels will be getting tyres in about a week so I will know exactly how much I want to lower it.
Looks like the only option so far is coilovers or or cut springs.
Any further input welcomed!
I've seen other cars (with macpherson strut suspension) have the lower spring cup/retainer on the strut rewelded at a lower point. This way you can run what ever spring you want (without chopping it up) and choose the lowered hight that you want. Anyone that is handy with a welder can do it, or you can take it to a pro/engineer.
Just suggesting an alternative that is not frequently used.
