Ive been told that Vectra calipers will go on a MkI.

Havent had the opportunity to research it thoroughly yet but as I understand it you use the Vectra caliper, mounting bracket and hose with a VW 280mm disc. Only fiddly bit is the caliper mounting bolt which needs a bush putting round the shank.

They use that caliper on European Astra GTE's so I would expect there would be plenty of performance pad options available.

You will need at least 15inch wheels of course.

You'd have to source pads from overseas I think though? That would add to the cost.

and Pete is running 14" steels, and I'm not sure he wants to change them over. (last time I checked anyway)

There should be some more readily available options, from some local brake manufacturors I'd think, and I know a few of the boys with the more expensive toys have some nice stopping packages.

    Pete...?

Also have you looked at 10.1" scirocco brakes? I think mk 2 ones. Read something about them on the Tex. still getting parts would be hard(er) though.

Did a bit of a run around today and managed to track down a full set of front and rear TRW pads.

They're equivalent temperature wise to the EBC green stuff pads and have a pretty good reputation in European cars.

They can be a bit dusty apparently but that doesn't bother me.

I'm also getting a full set of braided lines made up. The car still has its original hoses throughout. They're long overdue for replacement.

While the brakes are off I'll get the shop to skim the front rotors for me too.

Hopefully I'll get all the bits back next Saturday and put it all together.

Yeah looked at all of those but I'd rather try to get all of this working properly first.

MK 1 brake upgrades go in this order.

239mm 10mm thick solid (Diesel Std)
239mm 12mm thick solid (Petrol Std)
239mm 20mm thick vented (GTI Std)
    256mm 22mm vented
    280mm 22m thick vented

Search the forums/google for calliper options, there's a heap of stuff to suit.

The discs are easy to get new they're the same as a lot of Audis.

There's some all new kits here at a hefty price that give you an idea of the bits needed.

As has been pointed out before GTI brakes are actually pretty good. It's the fact that they're 30 years old that's the problem , not that they're under-engineered.

At Sandown I ran with stock Master cylinder, stock rear drums, 2 year old brake fluid, and standard Bendix pads on GTI callipers.

Next time I'll have a MK3 booster, new 22mm master cylinder, MK 3 rear discs machined with new TRW 650degree soft pads, new brake fluid, freshly machined front vented discs with TRW 650degree soft pads.

I think that's enough changes to make a difference! I'll also throw in two new hand brake cables to suit(Scirocco) and some proportioning valves for good measure.

If all that still doesn't stop me, I'll consider the 256mm disc option.

Another discovery I made today is that my old Bendix pads are the kind that contain ASBESTOS! Hooray

Just as well I washed that brake dust off the rims.

Just pulled the front discs off and discovered the wheel bearings are shot too!

Another item for the list! Hooray!
