    Post Golf MK1 Conversion Questions

I have a 76' 2 door LS. it is currently running a 1.6L Carbi 4speed and even though it still runs i think it needs either fixing, rebuilding or replacing as it does not run very well with white smoke trailaing behind it.

I have been told that it is possible to get an engine out of the MK3. Possible the older 2E engines with less wiring and electricals. My question is what would be better and maybe a better performance upgrade. Whether it being 1.8L out of an MK3, rebuilding my own engine and just adding a 5 speed, getting an engine imported from South Africa as i have relatives there so it would be easy or to try get my hands on the 16V 1.8L engines that everyone talks about. Have in mind i have to put in a new wiring loom for the ECU and everything else that comes in with a Fuel Injected engine.

I live im Melbourne and have been ringing up and looking alot and have come with some few conclusions although a bit more help would be better to me. I am a bit financially limited for this moment as i have spent most of my money getting my MK1 back to the way i want. But any help or directions or where to go or what to get what be MUCH apreciated.

    thanks.

Id suggest here and Vortex for that info. Use the search functions, there are plenty of people that have done it. I do believe the 2E is the best option for what you are enquiring about yes...

Mk3 1800s are the easiest swap. All the manifolds are the same and just bolt up. Put a performance carby on it and save yourself the bother of all the wiring.

Read this thread, I've just done another one. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=38301

The 2E 2.0 will go in too of course, if you put an 1800 head on the 2.0 it makes things simpler for all the reasons above.

Take a wander through some of my other threads (see my sig for links) all the detail is in there somewhere.

Yeah, i would go for the 1800 choice.

I have a performance carby to suit that motor. pm me for details.

So the 2E would be a good option just like i thought. Although is it a big job to change from carbi to fuel injection? In my personal opinion i would prefer fuel injected as it is more economic and a smoother ride.
Why put the 1800 head on the 2.0L though, i dont quite follow?

the 1800 head will have all the right provisions for all the mk1 manifolds, the 2.0 is different.

it isn't really that big a job to change fuel delivery. but it'd be easier to source a whole front cut/wrecked car/someone with all the bits and pieces. run it from the donor fuse box forward and wire in your tails.

bin the 1.6l not worth the time and effort bang for you buck is 1.8l, a worked 1.6l will put out same power as a standard 1.8l theres always something floating around for sale keep an eye out think there is a mk2 1.8l for sale somewhere on the forums think its an easy swap and you wont regret it. the ultimate is 2.0 16v but not the easiest thing to get your hands on.

well id love a 2.0L 16V only problem is finding it and the cost as well. i have managed to
get some numbers and contacts around melbourne and am going to call up seeing if
anyone has wrecked or is wrecking a mark 3 if not looking for a decent engine.

Does anyone know where the best place to look for any performance parts or engines for golf be? thnks

Depends on what parts your looking for i buy all my parts out of the USA from a couple selected companies (done online) you can get anything you want over there performance wise and the Aussie $ has been good, even though you pay postage still nine times out of ten beats the mark up a Aussie distributor would put on the parts.
