    Post Gear linkages 4spd - 5spd help

    Hi everyone, so i have recently changed my old 1600 4spd to a MK3 1800 5 spd.

What exactly do i have to do to get the extra 5th in and the gears going in smoothly. At the moment only 1st and 4th go in. Is this something i can mod myself or do i buy it online?

    Thanks - George.

Jump on ebay or if you know of other sites even someone here may have a " 5 peed linkage kit " also you need to change this

VW GOLF MK1 1.8 GTi CABRIO PART OF GEAR LINKAGE #6 on eBay (end time 18-Apr-10 20:04:36 BST)

mine has been cut and welded i have seen these on the net setup as adjustable but the link has a stock one for 5 speed, you may be able to get away with not changing this part but gears may be close together or further apart its to early to think

So i can get this from a cabby set up? ill have a poke around to see in that case. Also with the part that you cut/welded back together that link, whats the actual measurement as im sure i can get it cut/welded. And the price for the 5 speed linkage kit doesnt look too bad considering how hight the AUD is at the moment.

The first link you gave me with the linkage repair, is that all i will need or more things as well?

You can use your existing linkage and just bend the long rod. The gate will be close, but achieveable.

You will also need to cut a piece off the shifter box under the car to allow the gearstick to get 5th.

The rod that comes from the shifter box into the engine bay has a splined end and is held in the correct position by a C clamp and a 13mm nut.

Put the car in first gear, loosten the linkages and put the gearstick inside where first should be.

Then tighten the 13mm nut and you should have (some) gears.

You may need to do this a few times before you get it right
