    Gear Box conversion.....

I have a very old transmission conversion kit that is new in the box and has all instructions. I've had it for 15 years if I had to guess (not sure when). At the time I was doing a lot of highway driving and thought a taller gear would be useful. I ordered the kit and never installed it. I think you can even put it in without removing the transmission.

When you move, you discover all kind of stuff and you say to yourself "oh yeah... forgot about that". I often bought stuff for my car over the decades when I thought "that won't be around in the future".

I don't expect to be doing any highway driving so I don't really need it but I've got it already....

Has anyone ever installed any brand sixth gear kit in their Mk1? Should I even bother? Kind of a waste but what else am I going to do with it?

The only person I know that added a 6th gear kit was Peter Jones on one of his race MK1's - see his posts in the Restoration section.

Probably a good idea for race cars but a lot of $ and work for a road car, especially when our max speed limit is only 110 ks.

Most people who want a taller gear use a diesel 5 speed box.

Even with a standard 5 speed you're only pulling 3000 rpm at 100 ks so going to 6th would give you less revs but further down the power band. You'd have to change down at every hill you came to.
