    fuel tank size mk1.....

    hey guys im am wondering what capacity mk1 golf diesal fuel tank is??? im pretty sure thats what is in my mk1 just wanting to know so i can see exactly whats going on i have a faulty fuel gauge it reads but not correct and im still waiting for a speedo cable ( posted in parts wanted section)

    According to the original handbook it's 40L, that would match what I'm getting into just right

    thanks mate, sounds about right i ran it low on the needle last week filled it up took 36litres so 40litres sounds right on the money

    45L is the capacity, according to the manuals.

    whether it actually is that or not who knows.

    i can only ever get 25 litres into mine, damn, should clean out those breather hoses.....

    That sound's all too much like a diesel tank. Foaming problem's. Had them too.

    Ahhhhh, the memory's standing there for 15+ mins to fill a full tank.

    The tank should be 40 litres plus what ever in the filler neck.

    My GTI handbook say's 40 litres(9 gallons)

    Very early Golf's had 45 litre tanks.

    why would they reduce the tank size? thats quite interesting really!

    I don't honestly know.

    Maybe they didn't measure it properly for the first couple of years

    I think the tanks were 40 litres + 5 litres reserve. As far as I know all the tanks were the same size.

    i remember a manual i have saying 42 litres
    76 MkI 3 door - daily drive/project - 1.8 5speed
    76 MkI 3 door swallowtail - 16v track car
    76 MkI 3 door "long term" project
