crap in the fuel tank maybe?

could be stuff in your fuel tank.. my yellow mk1 had that problem and it took me ages to figure out i had something floating round in my fuel tank and every now and then it would block the fuel sender... thats after i had replaced my fuel pump without results..

try blowing all the fuel back down the fuel hose if it happens again... or if you could be bothered, clean out your tank next time you're near empty...

Given me an idea - I have similar prob, car runs fine then just splutters out, usually when 1/4 tank or less fuel, have changed filter but not cleaned out tank. What best way to check fule pump?

Is it during longer runs that it coughs and splutters? If so, i'd think it would be crap in the tank. I fixed it by removing the little mesh filter which fits over the pickup line. It sucked all the remaining crap (after cleaning the tank out) into the fuel filter, but that way i could see it! (and duly replace the fuel filter).

I had this problem for 2 months once. The car stopping on the freeway, and just out of the harbour tunnel, and countless other similarly inconvenient spots ****ted me to tears.

yeah happens after long runs (30min or so), filled it right up today and no problems at all, so I'm pretty sure its crap in tank! Another fun job to do this weekend,,,
