    fuel pump mk1 gti

Has anybody here had a situation when the fuel pump stays on while the ignition is on but the engine not running ? in the past on my mk2 gti and mk1 16v the pump would only come on for a few seconds . any ideas ?

Sounds like you have the wrong relay, the early fp relays have an external 16amp fuse. Depending on whether the car has had the 'relay recall' done the relay will either be mounted on top of her fusebox (second position from left, I think) or on the fusebox itself, again second position in from the left. Both early and late relays will have 5 prongs.
