Fuel pump & fuel pump relay

    Good morning,

Having major drama's with my fuel pump and fuel pump relay and wondered if anyone could advise what these 2 items would cost for my 1990 mk 1 cabriolet?

    Thanks

Locally up to $300 for the pump and $80 for the relay last time I asked.

Personally, I'd bring 'em in from GAP.

Some important information on this on the vortex about a relay harness adaptor mod.

    http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1565000

I was going to do this on Liam's GTI this weekend but never quite managed to get my head around what wires to cut as I don't have a harness adaptor...

    Good luck!

In response to your post on the vortex link :-

I had to do this back in 83 to my first Scirocco with no info from VW forthcoming at the time ( and you think there backwards now ...)

k, look for terminal 87 on the fuel pump relay itself, gently bent the terminal so it protrudes above the side profile of the relay and soldered a lead onto it. Allow enough cable so you can fit the relay back into its original position ( all the other contacts remain active) and have enough length to get behind the relay plate.

Connect this lead thru to the cable adaptor behind the fuse relay plate that connects the fuel pump and under bonnet items to the original A8 circuit pin,

You can remove the original wire from the connector block at A8. Its a bit ruff but mine worked for nearly 15 yrs without any more attention

Hope this makes sense, PM me if its lacking.

    merry xmas.

That there is a pretty clear description.

If I were looking to 'trial' this solution first before bending anything - then the option would be to jumper the relay into the relay board socket and then the #87 to the wiring to the pump et.al.

Thanks so much for this tip Grant!!

Yeah, you could prob use an old fuel pump relay stripped of its case and guts to use the pins and base for a truely plug in unit, then knock up the wiring into a std VW relay base to clip into the top of the fuse/relay board as per your pic.

Thanks Guys for all your help....

I knew I had been 'shafted' by the VW 'specialist' in question.

$1390 plus GST for the 2 items in question! And now there is a really strong smell of fuel (the garage closed til Jan 14th!). It looks like it is leaking from the lead that goes into the manifold where there is a turqouise blue switch?

Please excuse my lack of mechanical knowledge....I am not qualified like most users on here!

    Cheers

That there is the '5th' injector, or cold start injector. Off to the top left on the intake right?

Has the work been done yet?

Thanks for that. The fuel pump and fuel pump relay have been done but the garage in question do not know the cold start injector is now leaking fuel. They are not back til 11th Jan. They are sure to claim 'it wasn't them' who have damaged the cold start injector but it wasn't leaking before the fuel pump became knackered and i'm pretty sure they would have fiddled with this to detect what the original problem was?

Is it an easy fix? could they have over tightened or how else could this have been damaged?

    Thanks for your interest.
