Fuel lines and a Carter 4070

    Hey Guys,

Planning to plumb up my new carter 4070 fuel pump tomorrow.

Just had a little look at my new pump and my rather torn apart mk1 and noticed the following:

The pump runs 8mm (5/16") barbed fittings.

The mk1 is plumbed with 6mm (1/4") OD steel tubing and 6mm (1/4") ID hoses.

I know a few of you run these carters and I was wondering if you did the following:

    - squeezed 1/4" ID hose onto the 5/16" barbs?

    - swapped the whole system to 5/16" ID (including the steel lines to 5/16" OD)?

    - swapped out the carter barbs for 1/4" OD ones?

I reckon the barb on my weber is 5/16" (8mm) too.

Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb, but Ive plumbed air and water, but never fuel!!!

    any help would be great!

    cheers

    j

Rubber tubing should easily stretch the extra 1/16th.

Are you mounting the carby down low at the back of the car where it will work best. It needs to be gravity fed from the fuel tank so it's self priming.

    Cheers

All of the above and the some. Easiest just to buy new barbs for the carter. They're only a few dollars at Enzed or Pirtek.

    Hey guys

Thanks so much for the tips!

Sports racer - yes i was planning on mounting under the car right next to the tank. Its pretty tight in there, but should fit with a bit of playing around.

Pete - thanks for the tip, Ill order some up! Seems like a tapered thread, would I be correct?

Thread size on the carter is 1/4" NPT (Yep, it's tapered)

Enzed or Pirtek will have these on the shelf.

Pick up some stainless steel hose clamps while you're there, they're much better quality than the ones found in auto parts stores.
