    front cross brace

has any made a cross brace that goes between the chassis rails in front of the radiator utilizing the 2 bumper bolt holes as mounting points?
it would have to help twisting much the same as the lower horn braces!

A bottom brace is more important on the MK1, later Cabby and 16V Sirocco had them from the factory. DIY Strut Brace

GoKraut makes them but as h100vw has pointed out the lower one is much more important.

    thanks for the replies,
i will make the lower one eventually, but i need the front one like you've shown as my radiator support panel is stuffed, it has been welded all over the place by the previous owner/s and has cracked again in several places. i need this one to stop the front engine mount splitting it completely in 2

Yeah, I had a high mileage diesel that had torn up that panel the same way.

A lot of it is to do with the condition of the rear engine mount and rust.

That panel can be welded up or replaced but one of those braces would cure things too.

It wouldn't be too hard to fabricate one of those cross braces they're a pretty simple design.

have only had the car the car for a few weeks, and from what I've found out so far, it's had a checkered history.
it will only need to stay together until a new body comes along, then it will be a donor, so one of those brackets
should hold the front together for the time being
