Wow. Thanks so much for digging up all that info, I really do appreciate it.

I've used a gear speeds spreadsheet to compare the ACD and 6Y side by side. The 6Y will actually be doing less revs at highway speeds than the ACD. The ratios are not as close and it has a much larger rev drop between each gear.

If I'm reading the information correctly, the ACD would actually accelerate quicker with the ratios it uses in first and second, despite the different final drive.

Here are the two spreadsheets if you're interested in them.

    ACD: http://www.nohatnoplay.com/wp-conten...rspeedsACD.xls

    6Y: http://www.nohatnoplay.com/wp-conten...arspeeds6Y.xls

I'm going to put the 6Y in and see how it goes. If it's unsuitable I'll drop it all out again and fit the ACD.

As a side note, how much are these two gearboxes worth if I were to sell one of them? I'm considering parting out the green car now rather than selling it complete.

I'd pay $500 for either of those boxes.

The best combination would be the 4.25 Diff moved across into the close ratio box. Run that combo through the calculator.

I use the close ratio gears set with a 3.94 diff.

I was thinking the same thing about switching the close ratio gear set over to work with the 4.25 diff, but 110km/h would equal 4800rpm in fifth! That's a little too over the top for my liking. I think the 6Y as is will do the trick.

    Motor is in. Achievement unlocked!

One blurry photo to prove it. To be fair it was about 2:00am at this point so I wasn't paying a lot of attention to the camera's focus.

Oil cooler looking all sick up the front.

We finished painting some bits and pieces before that.

Gave the radiator a light coat of black to cover up the old yellow overspray

Put new tie rods in. Passenger side rack boot arrived at work today so I'll whack that on and do up the rack ends tonight.

Sitting and waiting. We did a lot of cleaning up after that. The plan for tonight is to put the control arms and all that stuff back in, move the coilovers across and the slotted brakes. We might do the fuel setup as well if we can. After that I'll clean up some of the engine wiring and basically call it a day until I get back from Japan.

Can anyone recommend a place in Sydney that repairs/services instrument clusters? I want to get the MK2 gauges looked at because the odometer isn't working and the clock can't be set.

    Good progress.

With the cluster, may be easier/cheaper to get another one then try and repair the old one. If you can't find one locally, try New Zealand, we had heaps of Mk2's and they are much cheaper then here. Either log on to vask.org.nz or send me a photo of your cluster and I will work my contacts to find you another one.

Thanks for the info, that sounds like a decent idea. I can't really afford to buy another one at the moment so I might put in the one I have (everything else works) for the time being.

Got so close to having the car back on four wheels last night, but it wasn't to be. I'm going to try and squeeze in another few hours on it this Friday night to get it there.

Unidentified coilovers came out of the green car. Anyone know what these are? A friend suggested G4s, but I can't see any brand markings to confirm.

Chucked those in plus the reco'd driveshafts and new rack ends.

Took a photo of this because it's red and looks all cool. Not a factory part I'm assuming? The green car has a different one with an adjustable thread in the middle which looks aftermarket as well.

Just a little preview of what might be to come? Haha.

We took the slotted rotors out of the green car and put them on Rupert. I had to leave it at this stage because it was way too late to keep going, but it's very close. Need to get the impact gun on the hub nuts and rack ends, change the brake lines over because I have new ones, put in my prothane rear engine mount, and then put the wheels on and drop it down.

All of this took forever because we had to put all the other bits into the green car at the same time. The green car now got the suspension and rotors out of the yellow car which aren't at all bad. The discs had tonnes of meat and the suspension is Spax springs with what look like Bilstein shocks. It should drive nicely as well!

Got the engine mount and headliner kit.

Sorry about the other pictures. They should come back to life on Sunday.

I'm now back from my car pilgrimage to the land of JDM, and it was incredible. Even more motivation to get the Golfs running ASAP. I picked up a few bits and pieces while I was away to help out.

Bought a second-hand Momo Prototipo, HKB hub extender and Braith catch from Up Garage. I had an identical Prototipo in my S13 and loved it. This one is a little more weathered and should look right at home in the Golf. Also bought one of the small MK1 front lips while I was away which arrived in the mail. I have a GTi type one already, but it's not my flavour. That red 16V badge will go on the back under the Golf LS badge. I also found my old Broadway mirror.

Before I left I got the Prothane rear engine mount fitted.

Got the tie rods all torqued up..

.. and the wheels back on.

Here's Rupert right before I left finally on all fours. He's in the same spot now but with a layer of dust on him.

The green one is also on the ground but has no motor in it yet. The 8V will be going in very soon I hope. I need it to be running ASAP!

Fingers crossed I have some updates later this week. Wednesday's public holiday will be a full day in the shed. If luck is on our side I'll have a video of us firing it up, but there is a lot or work between now and then.

Great work so far mate, your getting close for sure!

Those coilovers look just like hottunings to me, but with blue anodising on the spring mounts instead of natural..... either way, the hottuning/technix whatever they are ones are rebranded by heaps of companies so its feasible.

Whats the plan for the green one long term? are you going to keep it?
