    Engine Mounts

Hi, bought some poly engine mounts for the golf.

However, the drivers side engine mount/bush that I bought is larger than the passanger side mount.

I think in a diesel, the drivers side diesel engine mounting is larger than the passenger side mounting (the actual bracket).

Could anyone confirm this - whether the drivers side mounting bracket is larger than the passenger side in a diesel MK1 - if this is the case I just need to get a bracket instead of returning the item.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers.

Certainly is, but a diesel mount isn't the one you want.

You'll need the big mount bracket (74.6mm) off a late model MK1, like a cabby or campaign model.

Otherwise just get another passenger side one, it should be the same size (64.4mm)

This is the larger mount but note that it doesn't have mounting points for the alternator.

ahk, interesting. i will measure up the larger mount tomorrow.

where did you source the larger bracket from? ... i would prefer to run larger mount and bracket if possible.

hmm the easiest solution was staring me in the face. i exchanged the larger mount, for another passenger side one. thanks peter lol.

hope the poly mounts are ok, i believe performance wise they are an improvement, but perhaps in terms of day-to-day driving they can be a bit noisy and harsh, thought since i had the motor out i may as well try them.

The engine mounts are fine to drive with, you probably won't even hear any extra noise.

It only gets bad when you replace the gearbox mount under the car with urethane.

Here's some info from a good mate of mine..

Well I got around to fitting up the mounts today.

Thought it would be fairly straight forward! No such luck!

Noticed that the RH mount is cast upside down!!!! The offset locating hole of suppose to be offset to the bottom.

But BFI cast it upside down with the offset up the top & with the cut out for the engine mount bolt.

VW have there offset's located down the bottom. You can see the arrow's which way is up

    BFI cutout

Engine mount offset is upside down!!!!

Out with the die grinder & a square headed burr bit.

    The right way around!!

Luckily I didn't wait around for the stage 2 mounts, as I was already waiting for 3 weeks without any progress of when I'd see them. So I just got whatever the distributor had on stock. Would of been even more pissed if I had of waited 1.5 months parts & then had to modify them!!!

Its annoying as you get some new parts & are all excited about fitting them up & trying them out, only to have the experience ruining due to incorrect fitting parts!!

Anyway, I did get a chance to try them out. Now I'm sure that the mount kit by itself is ok & would make it only slightly more rougher & restricting the engine/gearbox from moving.

But with the rock hard VW Motorsport mount, its basically like solid mounting the engine/gearbox very rough!!!! The engine/gearbox doesn't move one bit
    Then later...

Well after a bit over a week of running with the BFI stage 1 engine mounts & doing nearly 600km with them. The car has nearly shaken itself to bits!

I can safely say they are "definitely not" for the daily driver!

But will keep them for another project somewhere down the line, cause they improve the gearshift quality heaps & also help put power to the ground.

Will probably just fit the VW motorsport rear mount whenever I race it.

Have since fitted a new set of genuine VW diesel mounts & the car is back to being nice, smooth & quiet.

Now just have to fix all the rattles the other mounts have created!!!!

And he just said to me..

oh. & why I only use genuine mounts? you can say is cause I've tried nearly every kind of aftermarket type, brand etc & they all became soft & sagged within weeks

So there you go. Personally i've never had enough HP in a Mk1 to bother with HD mounts.. Yet.

    ummm...ouch.

i just bought those exact BFI mounts lol

my whole project, i have said to myself, just get genuine parts, you know they will fit and if they lasted 30+ years up until now, im sure they are ok....but of course how else do create dramas in your life without trying aftermarket parts....

hmmm i'm not in a position to be taking the motor in and out on a regular basis....for the amount of track work i will be doing a year, your post confirms the fact that perhaps i should of just stuck to the way i have been doing things and get all genuine parts!!

i might just get the diesel mounts then which are a slight improvement on the basic petrol ones i believe....

    thanks for the info.

I use OEM mounts fitted with the prothane inserts. Solid Prothane gearbox mount and a Super pro poly front box mount. Yes it's real noisy and yes it shakes like crazy at idle.
