    Which engine...?

    Hey guys,

I've got a question regarding engines. I've got a MK1 now with a 1.6 engine out of the stock MK1, it's got a bit of work such as bored out to 1.7, port and polish, renault downdraft weber plus some other bits and pieces. Now, i picked up another MK1 not long ago with a MK2 GTI 8v in it. I'm considering swapping the mk2 8v into the mk1 I'm using. Would it be worth doing the swap? It will be going onto the MK2 gti box i have in the car now.

    -Drew.

the 1.8 is generally the better engine but no telling if it will give you more performance straight off without knowing how its setup... e.g cam and carb.

The Aussie spec GTI MK2 motor is only good for 90hp unless it's been modified. It may have more torque than your motor but I can't guarantee it as some 1.7l conversions are pretty quick. Anyone who has the time and money to build up a 1.7l motor usually makes sure the head has some work done to it too.

the 1.8 mk2 gti engine usually ends up with a carb and some kind of better exhaust than the mk2 gti exhaust if it ends up in a mk1, so they're usually better than the stock mk2 on digifant, but yes, a worked 1.6 can be pretty decent.

i had an RV 1.8 in a mk1 with DHLA, g-grind and extractors that made 95whp.... I'd say thats fairly typical apart form the cam, which can be had for cheap.
