I've got one of those too. I think they were a locally sourced replacement back in the day.

Plastic header tanks were a really new concept back them and local rad places weren't tooled up for them so the local after market suppliers came up with these.

Can be rebuilt if required as the tanks are brass.

Does that mean in theory these are 'stronger' than OEM plastic tank rads?

i had one of these, gave it away to a man for a special project he had... not VW, but cooler than most mk1 projects...

i don't know why you need a "strong" radiator. if the cooling system works properly, the plastic end tanks are just fine.

the guy I gave mine away to needed a brass/copper radiator for regulatory reasons.

I went through 7 radiators before i came across this one. The plastic tanks dry out when left sitting, then when they get pressure. they burst.

    Well for me anyway,

mmm, i've never had to replace a radiator in any of the mk1's I've had.... weird.

Dad's had leaks in his once or twice, but he repaired by pulling off the tanks and resealing with some kind of silicone sealant.

Possibly they don't like cold tasmanian winters while they arent being used.... I suspect always having coolant in them actually helps them survive better.

thats what me and mates dad came up with.

Most i got where stored away. And finding a new one local was beginning to be a pain.
My new Mk1 has a great stock radiator, its only the thin petrol one. but everything works great.

Just never seen a all metal one before, t does look the tits though and very solid.
