Out of interest what did you do for the outer CV's? Did you have to modify the driveshafts or the hub at all? I want to beef up my outers at some stage as they would be the weak link in my setup.

I remember that we had to machine an extra circlip groove on the end of the spline, I think it was the outers.... Unfortunately they are all assembled now so I cannot go and look. There is also a chance that the 'spider' will need a little attention with the die-grinder - not quite at that stage yet, but Peter's went in without a drama.
Ahh that looks like the circlip... so it is on inner end after all.

It's been a while...
OK so it looks like you didn't have to mod much on the outers. Hmmm I wonder if they were the early style or the later style driveshaft. One has a circlip towards the outer of the spline, one has the circlip towards the inner. Thanks, I'll look into it once I sought out some other things first.
great thread people, this is what we're supposed to be about!
between mollins and I (both of us with 90mm inners) we have gone through 5 inners and 4 outers in 18 months.
i love the idea of using transporter outers - are there any size issues with the uprights etc?

Mk3 GTI, VR6 and T4 Outers are all the same.
You will be alright Charles as you are using Mk1 Shafts.
The guy in the Tex thread was using Mk2 Shafts in a Mk1 which will bugger it as they are 5 or 10mm too long.
The same thing happens if you use Mk1 shafts in a mk2.
With regards the Mk3, the VR6 Outers are bigger than the 2L and 1.8, but they swop over ok.
You just use whichever shaft suits your suspension width, standard or plus suspension.
Good thread this, lets have more info on here.
