going to be screwing the new roof racks down tomorrow and just want to know if anyone can tell me how much room there is between lining and roof. i obviously dont want the screws to come through the lining?

    second that.

mk1s have perfectly good rails down the sides to clamp racks to. the minute you screw through the roof, you wreck what is otherwise a perfectly good roof.

its really not worth it. even for practicality reasons - screwed down racks have all the real carrying capacity of an aged cat. clamping racks to the corners of the roof is where the strength in the chassis is, and, theres no 'tear through point loading' effect.

i say keep on looking man, drill all those holes and it will be just another golf thats been played around with. throw those racks on one in a less pristine condition instead at some point. heaps of the general car wreckers will have a set out back in the clamp style which they would have forgotten about. take a picture round and show them is the best way to find some. wouldn't be hard to make a set if your handy too. anyway hope the kermits still sexy tomorrow

I just bought some cheap rails in Super Cheap, the Golf has standard fitment rails on it, unless you are looking for something very special.
