a honda B16a2 would fit pretty easily...There are videos on youtube of a mini cooper with a b16 and it absolutely flies! Would love to see it in a mk1/2
if you want to go with a vw/audi engine just be patient and look in the right places and something will pop up there is a 1.8l 20v beetle front cut for sale on the north side of brisbane and theres a 1.8l 8v on k jet forsale at toowoomba thats just off the top of my head without looking see easy
if you want to go jap, evo lancer motor is what id do around evo 5, 6 spec if you want to go cheap a gallant vr4 engine, i currently own an evo4 has aftermarket ecu (not flash tune) and custom exhaust, 220kw at all 4 wheels engine has been untouched runs 18psi and i do about 650kms a week in it for the last 5 months turn key reliable.

I'm more inclined to agree with gldgti on this, I just don't think it should be done to a mk1.
To be honest, unless you are shoehorning a Porsche GT3 motor where the back seat would be, I can't see it being worth the extra time, effort and money to put a jap motor in.
Sure, most of them might be a lot easier to tune over here but it would be a very big job to undertake with engineering etc. reward would not outweigh the effort when you could bolt a 16v straight in on standard mounts and go to town on it for the same result in the end performance wise and for a lot less pain. Plus the mk1 would still be "pure"

Mmmm i'm all for keeping it in the VW family, but if you wanted to do something slightly different, then a 1.6 Honda motor would be gnarly. Or an Audi rs6 V10 TT in the boot.
