    Diesel Glowplug Wiring

    How would one setup a Glowplug wiring harness into a non diesel Mk1?

    I was thinking running a 6 way fusebox that has the one input for power, and 6 out.
    Use 4 of the outputs for the glowplugs. using a 20amp fuse. and use one output for a LED on the dash to show the glowplugs have started.

    And to Trigger the fusebox, use a 4 pin relay with a push button on dash. so i can hold it in for 15 seconds for example and then start it.

    Would this Hold out? i know glowplugs can pull alot of amps, would a 40amp 4 pin relay be enough to turn the fusebox on and power up the plugs?

    Any info, links ect be good... enjoy doing this stuff so making a new harness is not a problem

    GP'S = Glow plugs
    BAT = battery
    PBS = Push button start
    FB = Fuseblock

    Forgot to put in a Fuse between Relay and battery.

    hey mate,

    20A isnt enough, but you can get a 40A circuit breaker from supercheap that works really well. You'll also need a relay rated for 50A. Its up to you how you want to switch it.

    If you buy the actual glow plug relay, you can hook it up with all your own wiring exaclty as factory intended so they will work with the key and at the right temperature. I have all the circuit diagrams, its pretty straighforward. That would be the best option in my opinion. Basically the facotry relay just takes some inputs from the temp sender on the end of the head and the ignition switch, and it also has its own timer circuit and outputs for the warning light.

    not sure yet,

    Was Chatting to matt, and he suggested a 1.9L (1z??) with a AAZ mechanical pump for the ease of little wiring ect would be great in a mk1. Something turbo would be fun, but might do that after its registered.

    Not ready to get a diesel atm, got other comitments taking up till end of year. but full steam ahead after december .
    Just getting all the small things done now, wiring, hoses, interior ect.

    fair enough. the simplest rout by far is to look for an INDIRECT injection engine.... so thats any of the 1.5 or 1.6l diesels, or the AAZ or 1Y (NOT 1Z!!!) 1.9l engines.

    The 1Z is the first TDI, (thats Direct Injection) and requires more effort to make work properly without the proper injector pump, which also requires an ECU and air flow sensors. You can make a mechanical pump run a TDI engine (like the 1Z, AHU, ALH engine code 1.9's) but you need to be able to swap the TDI parts into an old style pump and modifty the throttle linkage, or buy an MTDI pump (I know of one place you can get them online from the states, they are around $450 US). This is a good rout if you are keen for more torque etc, and you can afford it.

    Yeah i have been thinking more on a 1.6L IDI engine to start out on.
    Not familiar with Diesels, but more the keen to read and learn and gets some hands on.
