    Did Some Work This Afternoon...

When I bought this a few weeks back I noticed a bit of surface rust up on the firewall near this black cannister thingy...
So today I got stuck in, pulled it out, scraped it back with a wire brush, gave it a light coat of rust converter and then sprayed it with Killrust paint.

I used Forever Black on this plastic thingy..

    Finished painting..

    Back together..

Can anybody tell me where this hose is supposed to connect up to?

If I did anything wrong, can someone tell me before I make myself look like an idiot??

I would like to ask for opinions on the wheels too - they look pretty rough. What should I do to them to get them back to looking original?

Nice work with the rain tray, that's a fiddly place to get into.

The wheels just need repainting. Depending on what your time and budget allows for you could get them sandblasted and powdercoated at one extreme or just sand them back yourself and spray them with "Steel Wheels" from Holts or something similar.

looks like a drain for the rain tray, so if you can add to it to redirect it under the car would be benifical, helps water from laying in the lower arm support things

Thank you. I might look into getting them sandblasted. Should they be a matt silver colour?

Well done, Melissa. Good to see some tidy Mk1 work going on.

I was going to suggest pretty much what Pete said for the wheels. That's the best way in my opinion.

The hose is connected to the black box. There is a drain further to the centre of the car.

    just a breather then

the black box is a charcoal canister, used to filter the ommisions from the breather off the head

you can throw it in the bin really, and put a cute little filter on the top of you valve cover

Ahhh..ok then I will just leave it. I was worried it was supposed to be connected up to something but couldnt see where.... There was no mention of it in my repair manual.

I`d replace the 13" Wheels with 14" Ones from a Mk2 or 3. They look nicer, still original VW looks and give better handling and fuel economy.
