I've this same problem after my headlight switch burned out.
I'd go back and check thoroughly for shorts, look for burnt wires and bad connections.
Need some help guys, I was pulling my stereo out and popped a fuse. I replaced the fuse but then had no dash lights, so I replaced those little globes that go in the back of the dashboard..They looked blown when I changed them so thought, sweet all sorted.
However I now have sounds but still no dash lights, see no blown fuses, just cannot fathom it out.
Any suggestions ?

Hey guys,
I also don't have any dash lights on my mk1, just out of interest is the dashlight fuse the one on the far right of the fuse block under dash? if so what rating fuse does this run?
cheers
Feed for the dash lights is from the headlamp switch. Grey with blue trace. This feeds the dash lights when the lights are on. Check there 1st and work from there, you might have blew a portion of the switch mate.
Cheers

Got stuck into my dash today. Turned out the problem behind the tacho, dash lights not working was burnouts in the printed circuit on the back of the instrument panel, probably from when I burnt out a headlight switch (covered in a previous post).
These were quite hard to spot, but with some quick soldering I managed to make some bridge connections and fix it.
I had previously tidied the wiring up (a loose wire caused the short circuit that burnt the switch out), but ran over it again and found another loose wire that I taped up.
Maybe add these to your list of things to check?
