Start by finding something thin like a knife blade or even a piece of paper and slide it between each pulley and the inner timing belt cover. There should be clearance for the knife/paper to fit. If it gets stuck then there's you problem point and you don't have to take off the cover.

I finally got some time on my hands. The noise issue is solved! I removed the inner timing belt cover. All problems solved! Got a brand new water pump as well... All is good!

The carbs need some tuning. It won't idle without the choke engaged... Not enough fuel? Or what are your thoughts?

I also added a photo of my ****ty exhaust... Temporary solution until finances allow me to buy a proper exhaust.

I don't know much about bike carbs but normal carbs have a separate jet for idle. Start by checking that out, especially when they were meant for an engine half the size of yours.

It's always one step forward and twelve steps back!!!

I removed the carb and manifold and found a stripped thread. It caused an air leak between the head and the manifold... Got that fixed and that helped a lot! I should be able to dial in a proper air/fuel mix now. Unfortunately the idle adjustment screw broke while I was fiddling with it... So need to fix that. Oh, and my radiator developed a leak!

I hate my car right now! I should've taken it for a drive last night but instead it gave me more work to do. Which would be fine if I had any spare time in a foreseeable future. But I don't...

LOL. Welcome to the world of MK1 ownership.

There will always be something to fix. The trick is to fix it so that bit doesn't need fixing for another 40 years.

    I sure do!

    - Some more fiddling with the carbs is needed.
    - I need to learn how to set the ignition timing.
    - Need to rethink my brake setup.

The car is sloooow. It doesn't feel any faster than my VW Up! with 60HP. (Do you guys even have the Up! ? Or is it a euro thing)

The headers get red hot on cyl. 1 and 2 but not on 3 and 4. I'm suspecting some timing issue. Just a mere guess without having any clue what I am talking about...

The brakes are terrible! It takes some serious power to make this car stop. I'm guessing lack of vacuum for the brake booster.

Something not right with the timing or most probably the fueling. Are you sure it's running on all 4 cylinders?

    What brakes are you running?
