    Cold start issues

    Hi,

I've just finished overhauling the head on my 1990 mk1 cabriolet. Put a new 270 hydro cam with heavy duty springs.

She's been driving great, but it's a bitch to get it started in when it's cold. The engine turns over but doesn't take. When it does start it chugs and just gets going if I keep the pedal to the floor. After that it's all fine again?

Any suggestions what might be causing this? Thanks, Ed

Have you removed you starter motor and/or wires lately?

I'm guessing you have a K-Jet Injected engine?

When the key is turned a signal is sent from the starter to the 5th injector (to squirt extra fuel in) which is located on the Air intake manifold. At the same time the Auxiliary Air Valve opens to allow more air in, this allows the engine to idle at higher RPMs (1300 approx). When engine warms the Air Valve will close and the idle drops to normal.

I would check wiring to starter motor, 5th injector and Air Valve.

Go though and recheck all your wiring plugs and vacum lines, we did a similar job to a cabby and left 1 earth wire off and it ran like a dog the later K-jet with 02 sensor is temperamental.

    Thanks Michael,

You were right, one of the wires to the 5th injector must have got caught on something when I was putting it back together and was ripped out of the connection harness. I'll rewire it this weekend and see how I go.

Thanks for all the responses. Ed
